Petacciato

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 3,638 · Postal code: 86038

On the coat of arms a tower burns above the sea: it recalls 1352, when the Hungarians of Corrado Lupo destroyed the town. It was not the only time: in 1463 the castle was set on fire because Petacciato had refused to bow to Antonio Caldora.

That castle, Norman and of the eleventh century, was rebuilt as a Renaissance palace after the last Ottoman attack. On the coast stands what is left of the tower Charles V had raised against the Turks, split in two. Petacciato has been an autonomous comune only since 30 December 1923; before that it belonged to Guglionesi. Behind the beach of its 3,638 residents lies one of the finest dune systems on the Adriatic.

Saint Roch, patron of a town destroyed by the Hungarians

📅 Every year, on 16 August

Petacciato celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August; the saint was venerated from the 13th century in the old church of Santa Maria, in Apulian Romanesque style, before a new church was dedicated to him in 1967.
