San Giuliano di Puglia

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,057 · Postal code: 86040

On 31 October 2002 an earthquake brought down the primary school of San Giuliano: twenty-seven children and a teacher died. The youngest had been born in 1996, and of that year's cohort no one is left in the village. Five centuries earlier, in 1490, another earthquake had knocked the whole town down except the parish church.

That church is still there, fourteenth-century, with its Gothic portal between two carved lions and three rose windows on the front. Digging for the temporary village for those left homeless, at Piana Quadrata, brought to light a burial ground of the sixth century BC and a Roman villa with its wine press and herringbone floor. There are 1,057 residents.
