Santa Croce di Magliano

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 4,692 · Postal code: 86047

The oldest church in the town is still called the Greek church: it was built in the fifteenth century by an Albanian minority that had come from Constantinople, and until the eighteenth century the Byzantine rite was celebrated in it.

Santa Croce is the easternmost comune of Molise, at 608 metres: from here you see the Maiella under snow to the north-west and, on the other side, the strip of Adriatic between Termoli and the Gargano, with the Tremiti islands on clear days. Just outside, in a nature reserve, stands the Magliano tower, round and split in two: there stood the medieval village that an earthquake destroyed. The 2002 quake hurt the town's churches too; the 4,692 residents have restored them.
