The patron saint of Salcito is Saint Basil the Great, celebrated on 14 June in the church dedicated to him, the oldest and most important in the town: built in the 1500s, it originally stood on a medieval stronghold dating from the 9th century. Its bell tower, initially a simple gable and rebuilt in 1714 in the form of a tower with an octagonal drum and conical spire, still represents the face of the town today.
Salcito was part of a group of fiefs between the Trigno and Biferno valleys, belonging to Nicola d'Evoli; from the late 15th century it passed to the Di Capua family, then to the De Regina and the Spina, until in 1653 Marquis Paolo Francone bought it, making it the centre of all his family's holdings in Molise. It was precisely to fulfil Marquis Francone's dream that, centuries later, the church dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Saint Lawrence was built, its dedication recalling a document in the episcopal archive of Trivento attesting the existence, in remote times, of an ancient abbey dedicated to the saint in the same district: every year on 10 August, Saint Lawrence's feast day, festivals are held there with the participation of thousands of people.
