The patron saint of San Massimo is Saint Maximus of Nola, celebrated on 15 February: the saint's bust also appears on the municipal coat of arms, depicted on a gold base set against a blue field.
The village lies in the Sannio Apennines, on the eastern slopes of the Matese massif, and is today a tourist destination both in winter, thanks to the ski slopes of the Campitello Matese hamlet, and in summer, for the natural coolness of its setting. Campitello Matese has more than once hosted a stage finish of the Giro d'Italia, periodically bringing national attention to this corner of Molise.
