The patron saints of San Pietro Avellana are Saints Peter and Paul, celebrated on 29 June in the church dedicated to them, which holds the body of Saint Amicus in an attached crypt. The village originated from a settlement of local inhabitants who, after the destruction of the various hamlets that had held administrative autonomy, took up residence right next to the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro, at the time a genuine fortified citadel able to offer military protection as well: it was precisely around this monastery that the settlement gradually took shape.
Thanks to an abundance of springs and streams, the distinctiveness of its soil and its unspoiled nature, the territory of San Pietro Avellana is today particularly rich in forest products, first among them black and, above all, prized white truffles: the municipality is one of Italy's 42 National Truffle Towns, alongside centres such as Alba and Acqualagna, with a white truffle output that amounts to around 40% of the national total. Every year, on the second weekend of August, the National Summer Truffle Fair is held, followed in early November by the prized white truffle market exhibition.
