Fontanile

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 566 · Postal code: 14044

In 1042 the name is Fontinalis; later Fontanellis and Fontanis, while locally Fontanilis takes hold, the form in the Mombaruzzo statutes of 1337, meaning “land rich in spring water”. The village had a moat and two rings of wall, with four towers named after the leading families: one is left, the Ansaldi tower.

In the sixteenth century the duchess of Mantua brought the Senate of Monferrato from Acqui and granted a Thursday market. Tired of a lord reviving feudal rights, the villagers turned to duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga, who drove him out for two thousand crosoni. The casaforte stood on today's piazza San Giovanni Battista, by the church and its brick bell tower.
