Alba

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 30,804 · Postal code: 12051

Every autumn since 1928, Alba has celebrated the fair of its king: the white truffle, which here has its own market, world auction and liturgy. The "city of a hundred towers" — several still rise over the medieval skyline — is the capital of the UNESCO Langhe and an industrial capital disguised as a country town: Ferrero was founded here in 1946, and on certain mornings the cocoa in the air confirms it.

All around, Barolo and Barbaresco sit half an hour away through the hills. The perfect programme: Saturday market, tajarin pasta with butter, and a glass of nebbiolo while the sunset makes up its mind.
