Cortiglione

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 576 · Postal code: 14040

Until 1863 the village was called Corticelle; the new name arrived in February, a few years after unification. Both forms share one root, curtis: in the early Middle Ages, a lord's great estate handed to peasants to work. The Tiglione stream crosses its land, in southern Asti, among the vines that rule here.

In 1431 Francesco Sforza, leading the Duke of Milan's troops, invaded Monferrato and took many places in the Valtiglione, Corticelle among them, before pushing into the Langhe. Of the medieval castle only ruins remain. The old church of the Battuti, or della Trinità, is now the sanctuary of the Madonna di Fátima; San Siro is fifteenth century, its bell tower eighteenth.
