Castagnole delle Lanze

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,784 · Postal code: 14054

The "delle Lanze" comes from a family: the Lancia, whose line was begun by Manfredo I, from 1190 marquis of Busca and count of Loreto. He had earned the nickname as a young man, serving as a lance-bearer at the court of Frederick Barbarossa. Castagnole is the only comune in Piedmont to carry a name of the kind.

From the Lancia came Bianca, last wife of the emperor Frederick II — though the documents disagree on who her father was — and from her Manfredi, king of Sicily, whom Dante puts in the Commedia: "biondo era e bello e di gentile aspetto". Between the late fourteenth and the early seventeenth century Castagnole was never enfeoffed: it answered directly to the governor of Asti.
