Costigliole d'Asti

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,969 · Postal code: 14055

The name comes from Corte Costeliolae and then Costigliolis; with no precise writings, it is presumed to come from its position, on a ridge, and from the lime tree, common in these parts. The chroniclers Guglielmo Ventura and Antonio Astesano had the village born after Asti destroyed Loreto in 1255: that reading is wrong, since the place already appears in 1041 among the domains of the bishop of Asti.

It is true that after the end of Loreto the population grew. In 1382 Antonio Asinari, left sole owner, submitted to Amedeo VI of Savoy and freed the village from Asti: from then on Costigliole was governed by Savoy law, even when Asti passed to the Visconti, to Monferrato and to the Orléans.
