Magliano Alfieri

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,026 · Postal code: 12050

Until 1910 the village was called Magliano d'Alba; then it took the name of the Alfieri, the family whose castle stands here, built between 1649 and 1680. Vittorio Alfieri spent the first summers of his life in it, and mentions it in more than one letter.

In the nineteen-sixties the castle was turned into a block of council flats, and it has reopened only a few years ago. Inside is a collection given over to plaster ceilings: gypsum was plentiful in the quarries hereabouts, and peasant houses had their lofts lined with decorated plaster structures that cost little, looked handsome and above all held the heat through hard winters.
