Castagnole Monferrato

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,271 · Postal code: 14030

The name remembers the chestnut woods that covered these hills: gone long since, they gave way to vines, and only the name survives. The old municipal seal said as much, split in two: above the motto S. ANNA, below a chestnut burr. The village sits on the ridge dividing the Monferrato of Asti from that of Casale.

The vine here is Ruché, one of the rarest native grapes, which wants dry, chalky, sun-baked ground; its controlled designation of origin came in 1987. It is still a farming village, its old houses gathered round the bare-brick parish church of San Martino and the Annunziata confraternity; below run cellars cut into the tufa.
