The name, some historians say, comes from the old rivus francorum, the Franks' river, now the rio Gaminella. Paul the Deacon instead tells of a battle here around 663 between Franks and Lombards, the beaten Franks filling the stream with their blood: rivus ex sanguine francorum.
In 1874 a cremation burial came to light: the grave goods included a sea-green blown glass cup with ivy tendrils, signed in Greek «Ennion made it. Let the buyer remember!» and dated to the second half of the first century, now in the Louvre. Above the village, around the square of San Martino, three sides of the ricetto survive, and the squat brick campanile may be its gate tower.
