Incisa Scapaccino

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,276 · Postal code: 14045

The village changed its name twice. It was Incisa; in 1863 it became Incisa Belbo, after the stream that runs through it; in 1928 it took the name of Giovanni Battista Scapaccino, a carabiniere and the first gold medal of the Italian army.

In the middle ages the whole settlement sat on the hill, inside the walls of Borgo Villa, which had three gates: one is left. From the sixteenth century the village came down, stretching along the road to form Borgo Ghiare at the foot of the hill, then Borgo Madonna beyond the Belbo and Borgo Impero on the Alessandria border. Incisa was the capital of a small Aleramic marquisate, independent until 1548 though it passed from lord to lord.
