Vaglio Serra

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 284 · Postal code: 14049

Vaglio Serra is a comune in the Asti hills, scattered into the hamlets of Braglia, La Pietra, La Serra, Saborello and San Pancrazio, inside the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato vineyard landscape on the World Heritage list. The saint of one of those hamlets, Pancras the martyr, is also the patron. Its arms come in three parts: green with an eight-rayed gold star, barry of red and gold, and blue with a two-towered red castle on a green plain. Below the shield runs the motto Ad Vallum, pointing to the Latin vallum, the earthwork the name is traced to.

On the Vinchio boundary the territory runs into the Val Sarmassa reserve, set up in 1993 and shared with Vinchio and Incisa Scapaccino: over two hundred hectares of woods and small valleys with squirrels, dormice, hoopoes and bee-eaters, and wetlands such as the lago Blu full of amphibians and dragonflies. The subsoil belongs to the Pliocene basin of the Asti country, and fossil sea shells turn up easily in the clay and sand. The valley is named after the Sarmatians, who settled here after the Celto-Ligurian tribes and were later subdued by Rome.
