Cessole

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 420 · Postal code: 14050

Cessole's old village clings to the hillside halfway along the Langa Astigiana; the Bormida cuts the territory in two. Under German occupation two Jewish families were hidden here and survived the round-ups until they reached Switzerland. Yad Vashem declared their rescuers righteous among the nations: Emilio and Virginia Ambrostolo, Domenico and Luigia Brandone.

The parish church of Nostra Signora Assunta, or Santa Maria del Castello, was designed by Giacomo del Carretto, a pupil of Juvarra: two buildings stacked on the model of Assisi's basilica, with the oratory of the Disciplinati, the Batù, underneath. First stone in 1779. Under the arcades of San Rocco the val Bormida held its first market in 1640.
