Cossano Belbo lies on the Belbo, in the Langhe. Stretches of the walls of the castle of the marquises of Busca and Monferrato still show inside the village, while the Romanesque pieve of San Martino, once a Benedictine settlement, is a national monument.
The village, the river and the sanctuary of the Madonna della Rovere serve, with Alba, as the setting of the partisan stories in Beppe Fenoglio's «I ventitré giorni della città di Alba»; Cesare Pavese names it in «La luna e i falò». From a distance the sanctuary shows the brick gable of its chapel against a long yellow building whose upper floor carries an iron balcony.
