San Paolo Solbrito

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,197 · Postal code: 14010

The comune was born in 1928, when a royal decree joined San Paolo della Valle and Solbrito. The two villages appear together in a document of 948, an exchange that gave Bruningo, bishop of Asti, land there. They stood in the Traversola valley, then climbed the hills for safety, and two castles went up. Of Solbrito's a restored fragment survives; of San Paolo's, nothing.

Valossera comes from Valle delle Ossa, the valley of bones: tradition tells of a Saracen column lured into a wooded gully and wiped out, and of bones surfacing in the ploughed fields. The parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo is late baroque, frescoed inside and hung with seventeenth-century canvases.
