Villanova d'Asti

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,774 · Postal code: 14019

Villanova was planned on paper: it was founded in 1248, as the documents in the Asti archive say, and the people of Dusino, Solbrito and Supponito took part in making it. Of Supponito, abandoned over the centuries, only the name of a square is left.

The star-shaped walls always held. In 1690 the French troops of general Catinat entered the town and asked a ransom that Turin refused to pay; a solemn vow was made to the Madonna and the French left without touching anything, while they burned Poirino and had Ceresole sacked. The vow is still paid: the mayor attends the mass of the Immaculate Conception in San Martino and by tradition speaks after the Gospel.
