Riva presso Chieri

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,207 · Postal code: 10020

The name comes from the bank of the stream the town grew on. The first document naming it is of 1152: Frederick Barbarossa confirms to count Guido di Biandrate lordship over certain places, Riva among them. But the Biandrate held only half, since the emperor kept the other half, and would say to the marquis of Monferrato: quae non est comitis de Blandrate, this place is not the counts of Biandrate's.

In 1630 Vittorio Amedeo I had to leave a plague-stricken Turin and took refuge here with his family: Riva, oddly, stayed free of the contagion. Its castle then hosted the talks that led to the peace signed at Cherasco.
