Poirino lies south-east of Turin, on the border with the provinces of Cuneo and Asti, at the centre of the plateau that carries its name: an almost flat area of about 400 square kilometres, held above the surrounding land by escarpments, with a drainage system all of its own that runs into the Banna and Melletta torrents.
The local kitchen turns on two things, asparagus and the humpbacked tench, and in May the town puts them together in the asparagus and tench fair. The other date that counts is the Poirino carnival, four days in the week before Shrove Tuesday.
