The Nativity of Mary, patron of the land of the Princes Ferrero Fieschi
📅 Every year, on 8 September
Masserano celebrates the Nativity of Mary on 8 September.
Masserano was a principality. A papal fief, and therefore in practice an independent state: in 1598 pope Clement VIII raised it to a principality of the Ferrero-Fieschi, who held it for nearly four centuries. On 2 July 1624 the people, worn out by their lords' abuses, stormed the castle, sacked it and destroyed it: the prince fled and his eldest son was killed.
The other matter is money. Thanks to a privilege obtained from Barbarossa the Fieschi could strike it, and a mint worked at Masserano for almost two centuries: it produced mainly counterfeits, which spread across the whole of Europe. The last prince gave up every sovereign right in 1767 and left for Spain.
