Curino has no single centre: the town hall stands in the hamlet of San Martino, the parish church in Santa Maria, with houses scattered over the hills between Brusnengo and Pray. The name comes from Castrum Quirinum, a Roman post guarding the routes to the Alpine passes.

Tied to the papal fief of Masserano, it stayed outside Savoy rule until 1767, and its customs regime made it a trading place with the Valsessera and the Vercelli plain: the name Cantone Gabella probably dates from then. The Romanesque church of the Assumption at Santa Maria was reworked in the eighteenth century; a columned porch in front, behind it the tall eleventh-century brick tower, seven storeys high.
