Until 1621 this valley was called Valle di Bioglio, one of many hamlets under Bioglio with Pettinengo, Piatto and Camandona: cantons far from one another, which agreed on almost nothing, amid protests, petitions, quarrels and appeals. An edict of Carlo Emanuele I split them; in 1964 the borgata of Pianezze left too, for Camandona.
The new name came from the parish church of San Nicola: Romanesque in origin, it was rebuilt in the eighteenth century in its present shape, with a portico on stone columns and the saint's name written across the front. The bell tower, though, is fifteenth century, three centuries older than the church beside it.
