The name comes from the Latin domo picta, painted house, and the coat of arms takes it literally: a house seen in perspective, half silver and half red, under an eight-rayed star. The village was one of the five cantons of the Mortigliengo, with Mezzana, Soprana, Crosa and Strona: in 1627 they split into separate comuni, Casapinta being the south-eastern part.
For about two centuries the comune had no town hall: the council met in rooms of the parish, the registers stayed in the sacristy, and a municipal building came only between 1874 and 1875. The old nursery school, which still carries the word ASILO above its door, now houses the mountain community.
