Barbaresco

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 677 · Postal code: 12050

The area was known as barbarica sylva, the barbarians' wood, where old Celtic peoples withdrew to worship the god Tanaro. The wine takes its name from the village, the arms tell the rest: on gold, a blue crenellated keep with a square tower, half ringed by a low wall, and the motto De Barbarisco turris et arx.

Tower and stronghold really exist: the brick tower still rises above the roofs, beside the parish belfry. Almost everyone here lives by the vine, and the wine has taken a church too, the deconsecrated nineteenth-century San Donato, now the regional wine house. Since 2014 it belongs to a vineyard landscape on the World Heritage list.
