Bastia Mondovì

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 646 · Postal code: 12060

The oldest documents name only the parish of San Martino de Alma: Alma must have been the settlement's name. An eleventh-century deed grants the bishop of Asti the castrum of Caraxonis, Carassone; in the twelfth century it is Bastia Caraxoni, a fort of beams and planks — the kind called battifolli, which named another Monregalese village, Battifollo.

The lords of Carassone raised that bastia across the Tanaro in the thirteenth century; castle ruins are left. After the salt war the ducal decree of 1698 broke up the district of Mondovì: a year later Bastia was one of thirteen new comuni. Outside the village is San Fiorenzo, the pilgrim's chapel on the salt road, frescoed in 1472.
