Feast of Saints Pietro and Paolo
📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of June
On the last Sunday of June Cigliè, a municipality of 196 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron saints Pietro and Paolo.
The castle of Cigliè, built between 950 and the year 1000, was the seat of local power and later a barracks; today it is a house of the Capris family, its owners for three centuries. The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul is Baroque, and the masonry shows it was enlarged more than once: it is older, at any rate, than the chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua off the left aisle.
That chapel was paid for by Gio Antonio Coda, who had left his native village, Cigliaro, emigrated overseas and come home a great gentleman; repentance, it seems, moved him. In 1655 the notary Bocconelli drew up the deed for the building and decoration of the chapel, approved by Pope Innocent X; a second deed left the altar money for a daily mass, the priest a new house beside the church, and the credits he held on the communities of Cigliè, Roccacigliè and Piozzo. The mass was said daily until 1849, when the bequest ran out and the parish was allowed one a month instead.
