Clavesana

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 900 · Postal code: 12060

Clavesana was the seat of an Aleramic marquisate from 1142 to 1387, a small lordship that reached into Liguria, with Zuccarello and Andora, and lived squeezed between stronger neighbours: in the end Genoa took the Ligurian lands and Saluzzo those towards Mondovì. Its arms show two gold keys in saltire under a black C on blue.

The commune straddles the Tanaro: on the left bank the alluvial plain and the main village, on the right the hills of the lower Langa, where eroded slopes open into badlands of marl and sandstone. A white bell tower stands over the roofs; nearby the castle, destroyed in 1627 in the war between Savoy and Genoa, was rebuilt by the Clavesana marquises in the eighteenth century.
