Rocca Cigliè

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 154 · Postal code: 12060

Rocca Cigliè stands on one of the long ridges that name the Langhe, and was once Rupes Ciliarii: rupes is Latin for rock, crag, ruin, while ciliarum means either the grassy edge round a field or a summit, hence a village on a hilltop. Local tradition puts the first houses at a spot still called Villa, buried under landslides from some upheaval of the ground.

Of the old village the sandstone tower survives, square, four metres a side, five floors, and the town put it on its arms. The castle is not the first, destroyed at an unknown date: the rebuilding is brick and terracotta of fifteenth-century style, and nothing written describes the earlier one, only a sketch at the foot of the altarpiece in the chapel of Saints Cosmas and Damian, raised in 1633 because the plague would not go away. The parish church beside it was later redone in the manner of Francesco Gallo, the Mondovì architect of the Vicoforte dome.
