Dogliani

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,805 · Postal code: 12063

Dogliani comes in two pieces: the castle on the hill and the walled Borgo lower down, along the Rea stream. The medieval core can still be read, marked out by its two gates, Soprana and Sottana.

In the nineteenth century the town changed face through one man alone: Giovanni Battista Schellino, an eclectic architect born here in 1818, in the hamlet of La Spina, whose designs gave Dogliani a new look. The largest is the parish church of Santi Quirico e Paolo, begun in 1859: the dome came only in 1886, above an inner peristyle of twenty-four columns.
