Feast of Sant'Antonino
📅 Every year, on 2 September
On 2 September Caprauna, a municipality of 120 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron Sant'Antonino.
Caprauna lies in the upper Val Pennavaira, on the Ligurian side of the Alps, in a valley whose other municipalities lie outside Piedmont. With neighbouring Alto it is the region's exception: the only two Piedmontese municipalities whose main settlement lies outside the Po plain. Its arms show a chestnut tree bearing nine golden chestnuts, and a goat propped on its forelegs against the trunk, browsing the leaves.
In the eleventh century the land was among Bonifacio del Vasto's holdings; once split up, it went to the marquises of Clavesana, formerly lords of Albenga, who in 1320 enfeoffed it along with Alto, and in 1736 it passed to the Kingdom of Sardinia under the agreements preceding the Treaty of Vienna. On the terraces they have always grown the white turnip that carries the village's name, a Slow Food presidium.
