For some centuries Novello headed a small feudal state held by a branch of the Del Carretto. It was born in 1268, when the lands of Giacomo I, marquis of Finale, were divided among his three sons and Novello went to Enrico. The investiture of 1354 confirms their rights over Monchiero, Sinio, Bossolasco, Gorzegno, Mombarcaro and other places in the Langhe.

The village sits on top of its hill with the rows running down around it: barolo, dolcetto, barbera and nascetta. The hill is badly exposed to hail, so retractable nylon nets run above the vines on taut steel cables, high enough for tractors; they are pulled out when a storm is forecast.
