On 24 April Monchiero, a municipality of 558 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen.
Monchiero lies in the Langhe, on the Tanaro, and keeps an upper half to itself: Monchiero Alto, packed onto the hill above the point where the Rea torrent joins the river. Its coat of arms records that double relief, the two mounts standing for the hill of San Colombano and that of the Sanctuary.
The sanctuary of the Madonna del Rosario, up in Monchiero Alto, began as the parish church of San Colombano: the old building, in poor shape, was pulled down and rebuilt, and in 1773 the new one was raised to sanctuary. Today's parish church is another, dedicated to Saints Columbanus and Joseph, and dates from 1950.
