Prunetto first appears in a demand for money: in 1179 a bull of Pope Alexander III bound the villagers, with those of Camerana, Gorzegno and Carcare, to an annual rent owed to the monastery of San Quintino at Spigno Monferrato for the use of extensive holdings.
The village grew below the castle the Del Carretto raised on a bric, Piedmontese for hilltop, above the Bormida valley, around an older square tower; the fief stayed immediate, under the emperor alone, until it passed to the Savoys. Nearby, the sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine was the parish church of San Lorenzo until 1904 and keeps the frescoes Segurano Cigna of Mondovì painted there in 1478.
