Cavallermaggiore

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,472 · Postal code: 12030

The name almost certainly comes from horses: the Latins called equus the fine carriage horse and caballus the cart horse, while caballarium was the place where horses were bred. Draught horses were raised here, and the town carried the trade in its name.

Ascanio Sobrero, the inventor of nitroglycerine, lived at Cavallermaggiore for a long time: the town has named a street after him, and the family tomb holding his remains stands in the municipal cemetery. The title of city came from Vittorio Emanuele II in 1863.
