Cavallerleone

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 652 · Postal code: 12030

The name seems to come from the Latin caballarium, a horse farm, joined to the personal name Leone, perhaps the first owner of the land — the same origin as nearby Cavallermaggiore. As Cavalario Leone the place first appears in 1184 in a papal bull. All around is flat plain, crossed by the Maira.

In 1407 the Nucetto granted franchises and privileges, and that act is taken as the birth of the comune. The arms, given by the Savoy regent Maria Giovanna Battista, say the name twice over: a man in silver armour riding a golden lion. Of the castle two round brick towers and a gutted body remain.
