Feast of San Luigi dei Francesi
📅 Every year, on 25 August
On 25 August Barolo, a municipality of 705 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron San Luigi dei Francesi (Saint Louis of France).
Barolo sits on a small spur-shaped plateau, sheltered by hills that ring it like an amphitheatre, and gives its name to the wine. In 1200 the Rigestum Comunis Albe records the village as Villa Barogly; the core of the castle already stood, raised by Berengar against Saracen raids.
In 1250 the Falletti, bankers, bought every Barolo holding from the commune of Alba and came to control some fifty Piedmontese fiefs. Their castle, with its merlons and brick window bands, still stands above the houses and holds the wine museum. The last marchioness, Juliette Colbert, left the whole family estate at her death in 1864 to the Opera Pia Barolo.
