Monforte d'Alba

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,042 · Postal code: 12065

The name comes from the castle walls that girdled the summit: Mons Fortis. In the first quarter of the eleventh century the whole community, countess and peasants alike, had turned heretic: they read the Bible in a wholly spiritual sense, built their own doctrine of the Trinity, prayed day and night, and sought detachment from matter and martyrdom.

Around 1028 the archbishop of Milan, Ariberto da Intimiano, and the bishop of Asti, Alrico, besieged and took the castle. The people were deported to Milan and put to a choice: abjure or the stake. Most, consistent with what they believed, did not abjure. Corso Monforte in Milan is named for those events, and from it the vanished Porta Monforte and Pusterla took theirs.
