Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Monteu Roero celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas, to whom the town's Chiesa di San Nicolao is dedicated.
Once it was Monte Acuto, Mons Acutus. The Biandrate counts, who raised the first castle here, held it about three centuries; then, beaten by Asti, in 1299 they sold it to the Roero for forty-eight thousand florins, and the hill took the buyers' name: Mons Acutus Rotarianum, then Monteu Roero. At 395 metres it is the highest comune of the Roero.
San Nicolao, the parish church, dates from the fourteenth century, was rebuilt with its bell tower in the nineteenth and only got its Renaissance front in the twentieth. Outside the village stands the Castagna Granda, a chestnut of some three hundred and fifty years on Italy's register of monumental trees.
