Montà

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,715 · Postal code: 12046

The name comes from the climb up to the castle: it was so awkward that they called it Montata Fangi, the mud climb. The castle, at the top of the town, was built by the Roero in 1263 and wholly remade by the Isnardi; its frescoes and its prisons are still there.

The town of today was born out of a destruction. In 1254, once the counts of Biandrate were beaten, the villages around were razed: Turriglie, now San Vito, Desaja, Morinaldo, Tuerdo. Those who lived there moved and built separate closed clusters around the castle, and over the centuries the gaps between them filled in.
