Santo Stefano Roero

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,407 · Postal code: 12040

After the mid twelfth century it was Santo Stefano de Astixio; Roero came only in the fifteenth, as at Monteu Roero opposite, to which it owed feudal dependence. The lordship passed to the Roero of Asti for twenty-five thousand lire astesi and stayed until feudal rights ended; the arms still carry their blazon.

In 1217 the Biandrate raised a square tower of twenty-five metres on the crag. In the nineteenth century the owners gave it to the town as proof of its age; but the crag thinned, the tower was halved, and a landslide took it down in December 2002. The bare spur remains, facing the parish church of Santa Maria del Podio.
