Montaldo Roero

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 872 · Postal code: 12040

The name of Montaldo Roero says who was in charge. It is first recorded in a confirmation by Pope Eugene III to the church of Asti; in 1387 it appears among the dowry lands of Valentina Visconti, held in fief by the Roero of Canale. The family soon took full jurisdiction, and a document of 1434 calls the place Mons Altus Rotariorum, the high hill of the Roero.

The fief was later split among several houses, holding their shares from the bishop. Of all those lords only the Scarampi actually lived here, and they died out in the mid-nineteenth century. Its hamlets lie scattered around: Valle Preglio, San Rocco, San Giacomo and Tarditi.
