Saint Felix, patron of the land of the Castello dei Roero
📅 Every year, on 30 August
Monticello d'Alba celebrates Saint Felix on 30 August.
The village sits on a small hill and takes its name from it; the coat of arms says so again, with a tree on the middle peak of a three-peaked mountain. The castle above it is still lived in: the Roero held it in fief from 1376, by will of pope Gregory XI, and never let it go.
In 1787, for the wedding of Francesco Gennaro Roero and Paola del Carretto, the castle was disarmed: the drawbridge taken away, the moat filled in and turned into a garden, large windows opened on the first floor. Around the round tower a grand double staircase was built to display the family's magnificence: an earthquake carried it off in 1881.
