Roddi

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,546 · Postal code: 12060

Roddi's name comes from the Celtic Raud, or Rod, meaning river; the village stands on the hill above the probable site of the Campi Raudii, where in 101 BC Gaius Marius defeated the Cimbri. Above the roofs rises the castle, brick with a cylindrical tower against one corner: the core is eleventh-century, its present face a fifteenth-century rebuilding.

In 1525 it passed to Giovanna Carafa, wife of Giovanni Francesco II Pico della Mirandola, nephew of the philosopher and author of a well-known dialogue on witchcraft; widowed, she came to live here, and her line held Roddi until it died out in the village. The arms set the three Roero wheels beside the castle.
