Racconigi

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 10,028 · Postal code: 12035

Racconigi lies on the alluvial plain between Turin and Cuneo, squeezed between the last spurs of the Cottian Alps and the hills of the Roero. This is a land of water and springs, among the most fertile in the province: the Maira and its tributary the Mellea cross it, and at the northern boundary the Maira joins the Po.

Everyone knows it for the castle, a residence of the Savoy royals, where Umberto II, the last king of Italy, was born; around it spreads a wooded park of about 180 hectares planted with native species. Since 1985 the stork and waterfowl centre has stood in via Stramiano, set up to protect birdlife and reintroduce threatened species such as the white stork and the white-headed duck.
