Rocchetta Belbo

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 181 · Postal code: 12050

Rocchetta Belbo is the first Alta Langa village you meet going up the Belbo valley, on the edge of the Asti country. The Langhe road once called Magistra Langarum ran through it, and along it, in the first days of November 1244, pope Innocent IV came by: fleeing the troops of Frederick II, after months in Genoa he reached Lyon across the fiefs of the Del Carretto and Monferrato, the Asti lands and Savoy.

The old village stood beyond the stream, at a place still called Rocchetta Vecchia; there the old church collapsed under rain and landslides, and the parish church that replaced it, wanted by archpriest Caffa, opened in 1869. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, while the patron of the town is Saint Anne. The arms hold the two crops of these hills: a purple bunch of grapes on blue and seven gold ears of wheat on red, with a gold lion on the green half.
