Borgomale was the village of the apples: in Latin an apple is mālum and evil is mălum, only the vowel length tells them apart, and in time the confusion turned the place into the “bad village”. The coat of arms keeps the first sense: a hill with six apple trees.
The village sits in the Alta Langa and takes in the hamlet of Montemarino. The castle of the Five Towers was begun in 1429 by the Falletti of Alba over a twelfth-century fortification and later belonged to the Falletti marquises of Barolo; it became a residence when Borgomale passed to the House of Savoy with the peace of Cherasco in 1631.
