Monasterolo di Savigliano

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,357 · Postal code: 12030

Monasterolo di Savigliano, plain Monasterolo to everyone here, grew around a stronghold that Thomas I of Saluzzo had built in 1241; on 28 May 1378 the fief passed to the Solaro family, who gave the castle its name. Later rebuildings, the heaviest of them in the seventeenth century, turned it into a palace, and the municipal offices are there today.

The round corner tower survives, its crown carried on corbels and brick showing through the plaster; the rest is a quiet front, with two loggias of arched windows under the roof. The parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo is far younger, designed by Giuseppe Gallo around the turn of the twentieth century.
